Llandudno (Maesdu) Golf Club Ltd
Description
You can be sure of a warmer welcome at Llandudno's Maesdu course than that received by a group of Norwegians in the year 1098 AD. They came by sea and had on their minds that which couldn't be compared with golf. The bloody Battle of Deganwy ensued and the ground upon which they fought was named Maesdu (black field).
More than 800 years later the same terrain was eyed with less belligerent intent by Llandudno Council who allocated the land for a golf course. Although Llandudno already possessed the excellent North Wales links course and another, now defunct, at the Great Orme, they were keen to encourage tourism to the premier North Wales coast resort. They achieved more than that because Maesdu became one of Britain's top professional venues in the 1950's and 1960's, regularly hosting the famous Penfold tournament.
Among the Penfold winners at Maesdu were Henry Cotton, Harry Wheetman, Peter Alliss, Peter Butler and Harry Bradshaw. It was a great favourite among pros from all over the world who admired the blend of parkland and links golf and the broad expanse of scenery.
