Holyhead Golf Course

Description

Increasingly popular with Irish golfers - Dublin is only 90 minutes away on the nearby "Superferry" service - Holyhead is a seaside heathland course on Holy Island which is linked by causeway to the Isle of Anglesey. Close to the holiday resort of Trearddur Bay, Holyhead Golf Club has its own accommodation and has arrangements with local guest houses so that touring golfers can be assured of a berth close by. Holyhead has no trees but gets its character from rocky outcrops, undulating fairways hemmed in by gorse - and sea views, none finer than at the elevated 10th tee from where a 360 degree panorama takes in Snowdonia, the Llyn Peninsula and a vast expanse of the Irish Sea. Designed by the ubiquitous James Braid in 1912, Holyhead has re-routed two holes which has lead to the ninth becoming a par five and the course lengthening to 6,508 yards. The main improvement is the quality of the greens and the club believes they are recovering their reputation of being the best in North Wales. The course is at it most spectacular in spring but, dominated by the moods of the wind, is testing at any time.
