Bull Bay Golf Club
Description
Wales most northerly golf course. Occupying clifftop heights near Amlwch on the Isle of Angleseys rocky northern coast, Bull Bay commands lofty views towards the Isle of Man and to the mountains of Snowdonia and offers plenty of natural hazards as it dips and weaves its way around the rolling, rugged heathland.
Some notion of the nature of Bull Bay can be gained from the fact that 11 greens are above you as you play your approach shots - and from eight tees you drive to fairways that are below your feet. The most spectacular is the 18th, a long par four running downhill from a high tee that provides the finest of the vistas, not least because Bull Bays grand new clubhouse stands behind the green.
This course was a favourite of British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. It was probably at his behest that Herbert Fowler of Walton Heath designed it - although the Marquis of Anglesey paid for it, and provided the first clubhouse. J.H.Taylor and James Braid played an exhibition round on its opening day in 1913 and the great Braid took an eight at the third - a fact that has soothed thousands of Bull Bay strugglers ever since.
